The Exhausted and the Restless
Colby was bone tired. After three days tracking through the mountains in search of a child molester, he needed a break. The last victim had been found alive, but the perp slipped loose.
When Ian ruled that searching through the night again would be pointless, due to the stormy weather, Colby was relieved he could’ve cried, but his boss seemed rather put out.
“Why stop now? We could be closing in.” Don argued.
“Don, the freak has to be holed up somewhere tonight anyway. We’d miss him in the dark. Roadblocks are set on all routes leading back into town. We’ll catch him in the morning, I promise you.” Ian assured, tiredly.
Don just continued pacing. David and Colby exchanged glances. Don had been like this the whole hunt, all edginess and manic energy. Colby had never seen his boss quite so worked up. Sure, cases involving children got to everyone, but something about Don was definitely off.
“Don. Stop. We’re all tired and it’s not happening tonight. Let’s get rooms in the motel down the road and we’ll come back at dawn.” Ian continued.
Don paused in front of Ian, searching his face. “You really are exhausted,” he breathed out.
Ian let out a long sigh. “Yes and if you stopped long enough to feel it, you would be too.”
Don bounced on the balls of his feet a few times, weighing Ian’s words before calling out, “Alright boys, let’s pack it in.”
Colby could here David exhale in relief beside him. Ian did too, judging by his wide grin.
David glared. “Laugh it up, Edgerton. You’re the one sharing a room with that ball of restless energy,” he said nodding towards Don. Ian’s grin broadened.
