Don returned, wordlessly passing Ian a cup of coffee. Their fingers brushed as the cup exchanged hands and Ian looked up with a grateful smile. Megan was momentarily thrown by the familiarity of their interaction, but she dismissed it, instead focusing on relaying what she knew.
“Our latest victim fits the physical description of the bodies recovered from the woods, but I think it’s more than appearance that draws him. After we couldn’t get reach Tony Marino’s parents, I did some digging in the background of the deceased victims. One was a middle child of eight. Two were orphans. One had a father in prison and a mother in rehab. Another had two older siblings with developmental delays… These can’t be coincidence.”
“So not impulse grabs?” Ian clarified.
“No. These boys were stalked before this guy kidnapped them. He chose them because they were vulnerable, lacking a strong parental figure. We’re looking for a man that interacts with children regularly, one that wouldn’t arouse suspicion and considering that Tony didn’t have marks on him indicating he struggled, I think he knew this man and went with him willingly.”
“Is the kid not talking because he wants to protect him?” Don asked, incredulously.
“No… This man betrayed his trust. Loyalty isn’t keeping him quiet now. It’s shame.” Megan replied. Both men were silent at that.
“And Don? This is a hunch, but… I think it’s likely that there are other victims out there.”
“Why?”
“The timeline doesn’t fit. Three of the bodies were estimated to be from 20 years ago. One from eight years ago. And then rest from the last year. Going after these boys is a continual impulse. He didn’t stop and start. Either there are more bodies, or we’ve got live victims out there that haven’t come forward.”
