Title: Confrontation
Pairing/Characters: Don/Ian, David, Colby
Rating: PG
Prompt: #2 Starting Over
Word Count: 300
Disclaimer: I don't own Numb3rs.
Series: Buried Demons
Summary: Don is angry about losing their suspect.
“So he slipped out, and we’re back to square one.”
“Not exactly. We have a witness instead of a body. That counts for something, right?” Colby offered.
“Do you want to be the one to tell him that his attacker is still loose? Or the one telling the families of our other victims that we didn’t catch their child’s murderer?” Don asked harshly, stepping into Colby’s personal space.
Ian could see Don losing his cool and pushed between Don and Colby. “Don. You aren’t angry with Colby, so get out of his face.”
Don turned a furious gaze on Ian, but he just stared back coolly.
“Going to hit me Don?” Ian taunted. Don eyes moved to Ian’s still bruised mouth and he reeled back. Ian mentally cursed himself. He had momentarily forgotten about the previous night’s incident.
“Shit. Don. That’s not what I meant. I was just…”
“No… No. You’re right.” Don said, chastened. “Colby’s right too. It is good that we have a witness. We need to get his statement fast and hopefully a sketch of this guy. If he isn’t here, then we might as well head back to the city and regroup. The kid is our best lead.”
Don turned to David, “You and Colby should make sure the locals get all of the evidence sorted. With this guy is in the wind, we need to make sure we have forensics linking him back here.”
David nodded.
“I’m going to try to catch Megan before she talks to the kid or his family. I should be the one to tell them that we lost the guy,” Don stated glumly, turning towards the SUV.
Ian glanced at Don’s retreating form, then towards the woods, looking unsure.
Colby nodded towards Don. “Go, man. We can handle things here.”
