Summary: In the wake of an attack, Ian reenlists. Consequences be damned.
The mood at the office is fraught with shock and horror, also this sense of impotent rage and helplessness. FBI offices across the country are on high alert, but from Albuquerque, after rechecking flight plans and the lockdown at all of the local airports, there really isn’t anything they can do besides watch the news and pray.
The day drags and it’s almost black outside by the time Don arrives home.
Ian’s pickup is there and Don lets out a relieved sigh. He feels exhausted - physically and emotionally. After a day so filled with death and destruction, Ian’s physical presence is a welcome relief.
He opens the door of the house and is overwhelmed by the sight. The news is on, showing the same footage that has been playing all day. The parts for at least four different rifles, two handguns, and a wicked bowie knife are covering the kitchen table. Ian’s cell phone is also there, ringing stridently.
Don also notices a broken chair, a hole in the wall, and what looks like a shattered whiskey tumbler. “Ian?” he calls out uneasily.
A thump and muffled curse come from the bedroom, then Ian is striding out with a large army duffle. He drops it next to the table.
Don’s unease doubles when he catches Ian’s angry bloodshot eyes. “Ian?” he questions again. “What’s going on?”
“Jake’s dead.” Ian’s mouth curls viciously, more baring teeth than anything else. “I’m reenlisting.”
Don’s heart stops. He loved Jake too. Words of protest die in his throat at Ian’s determined expression. Don gets the sense that an argument now would be the last they ever have. He just grips Ian instead, kissing him fiercely, hoping to convey what he can’t in words. I love you. Please don’t go. Don’t die. Come back…
